Summer Fete July 2010

On a beautifully sunny Saturday, 17th July, Cleeve Hill Nursing Home held a celebratory summer fete. The residents, friends, family and staff all enjoyed a range of exciting activities including a raffle which raised a grand total of £466.75, and the nursing home would like to thank everyone who donated the wonderful prizes.

The Cheltenham Cuban Dance Club graced the dance floor with their sizzling salsa moves, and a mother and son duo played the piano and mouth organ. Chef Daniel manned the BBQ, and as the sun set everyone left the fete full and elated.

Easter Parade

Residents enjoyed an extra special Easter at the nursing home and spent the weeks leading up to Easter Monday crafting their own Easter bonnets. As you can see all their artistic work paid off and the beautiful bonnets were paraded around the large hall on Easter Monday.

Mother’s Day at Cleeve Hill

Residents at the nursing home are looking forward to celebrating Mother’s Day with a delicious 3 course luncheon. Instead of sending a traditional card why not surprise your mother at the nursing home with a splendid family lunch.

The luncheon offers an array of meals including vegetarian options. For starter you can choose from a melon melody, smooth duck pate or smoked salmon. The main courses range from traditional roast beef to smoked salmon terrine or wild mushroom risotto. Then to top it all off enjoy a special dessert of chocolate and fresh strawberry roulade.

The lunch starts from 12:30pm on Sunday 14th March and costs £8 per visitor. Speak to Lizzy at reception to book your place now.

Santa has a Secret in his Sleigh at Cleeve Hill Nursing Home

Santa visited Cleeve Hill Nursing Home residents last week with presents stacked in a rather unusual sleigh. From the outside it looked very traditional and decorative; however the secret on the inside was that it was actually made from two old commodes!

The lucky residents visited Santa as part of their virtual Lapland tour, all from the comfort of the nursing home. Barbara Tarren, Cleeve Hill Nursing Home Activities Coordinator, explains how it works, “We showed the residents a presentation about the different cultures and sights of all the countries one would pass on the way to Lapland. Our resident chef in the home also provided a selection of foreign foods which were enjoyed by all.”

The first stop was Denmark where they enjoyed homemade Danish pastries in the home’s new lounge. For lunch the chef also produced an array of Scandinavian cuisine. When they arrived in Lapland Santa appeared with his recycled sleigh full of presents for all, pulled by Rudolf. This was followed by a slide show about life in Lapland, and the trip was completed by a stunning Northern Lights display.

Cleeve Hill Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday

EvelynCakeEvelyn Dawson turned 100 in October and celebrated in style at Cleeve Hill Nursing Home. Evelyn enjoyed a magical party with her family and friends with balloons, banners, champagne, a buffet and of course an impressively large 100th birthday cake. Evelyn was very excited by it all, and she was especially pleased with her birthday card from the Queen.

Evelyn was born in Coventry in 1909 and continued to live there after she was married and had three sons. In 1980 she and her husband moved to Woodmancote to live with their youngest son.

Now that Evelyn is 100 her greatest interest is still her family, particularly her five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Commenting on her birthday, Evelyn said, “How did I get to be this old?” and is constantly taken by surprise at her age. “I take each day as it comes,” she said.

Swine Flu contingency plan

We have implemented a contingency plan so that the business can deal with the effects of Swine Flu.

Training Coordinator, Sue Farrell says, “Our biggest worry is that 15% of our carers could be sick at any given time for up to a week. We have overcome this by retraining our ancillary staff to work as carers. It is vital that every carer has participated in our in-house course on infection control so they know the best procedures to protect themselves and their clients.

In addition, specially trained teams are being established to provide the extra care to those clients who find that they need more care during this period. We are encouraging our clients to talk to us at the earliest moment so we can get extra help in place immediately.”

Cooking up a MasterChefa typical lunch at cleeve hill nursing home

Residents and staff at Cleeve Hill Nursing Home are enjoying more culinary delights thanks to the Cleeve Hill MasterChef Competition.  The idea was cooked up by nursing home director Rob Flexer, to bring some new and exciting ideas to this summer’s menus.

Now already in its 3rd round, the idea is that the nursing home catering team pitches against each other to come up with the best dish.  The dishes are judged by Rob and Maura Flexer and also a client family member; watched and enjoyed by the residents.

After Wednesday 8th April 2009 3rd round results day, the judges congratulated all of the chefs, yet again, on producing fine dishes worthy of high class cuisine.

Further rounds will take place every two weeks.  If you are a family member and would like to judge in future rounds, please let Liz at Reception know.

Summer Fete 21st July

The bad weather caused a change of plan for our Summer Fete but it didn’t actually stop it taking place.
The widespread flooding meant that the Brass Band couldn’t get to us and neither could some of the visitors. However, un-deterred, we transferred everything indoors and everyone who did manage to get here had an enjoyable afternoon as did the residents and staff.

Plenty of cream cakes and tea took our minds off the problems that the weather had brought and the various stalls did some brisk business.
